All Or Nothing. Does That Sound Like YOU?

Ch-ch-ch-changes can be rough. If you know me, you know I usually welcome change like an open umbrella in a windy rain storm.

I used to go hardcore, all or nothing, all in, sink or swim. I would be successful for a couple of weeks or even a month. Then, I would get overwhelmed or bored and that was all she wrote, so to speak.

All or nothing had me up and down like a yoyo. Once the momentum was gone, this yoyo left me hanging there at the bottom not moving up (making progress) anymore. This vicious cycle slowly chipped away at my confidence. Can you relate? Setting a goal, sticking with it for a week or a month, then poof, back to the same old habits?

Working with clients seeking to improve health and wellness for almost ten years, I have learned something vitally important about myself and others. The majority of us progress most successfully with small reasonable changes rather than my old all or nothing approach. So many of my consistent habits now were once small challenging changes. For example, after many years, I no longer struggle to do the following on a regular basis: take vitamins daily, eat a large breakfast daily, bring a snack when running errands, workout at least four times per week, drink water or eat protein and vegetables at every meal, floss/waterpik daily, and read before bed.

My current goals/struggles are much different. It is important to look at how far you have come over years, not weeks. Five years ago I would never have imagined my 2018 challenges would be the following: consistency with morning meditation, drinking a gallon of water daily, waking up an hour early daily including weekends, high level organization running my own business, and going to bed early. These goals were not even on my radar. THAT is the benefit to small changes. They keep you moving. The progression is upward rather than horizontal.

My Coach/Mentor often reminds me even imperfect and small action is moving us toward being our best selves. Heck, I never am, was or will be perfect so I can stop having those expectations for myself! At FitCity we are not looking for perfection. We are here to help you move forward toward your goals in ways that will build on your successes. Don’t waste your time thinking about the times you “failed”. All of those steps brought you here today to this moment.
