Athlete of the Month Megan

I heard about Coach Sarah from a friend, Jen Trudeau. She had talked about Crossfit at work and I immediately put up a wall. Everything I had heard about Crossfit seemed too intense and too “unsafe” for me. She eventually convinced me and I have never looked back. All of the myths I heard about Crossfit were proven wrong the day I met Coach Sarah. She truly cared about my health, safety and personal goals. I was hooked! Now, I have been doing Crossfit for 11 months. When I joined FitCity, I was looking to change things up a bit. I had just moved to Florida from Indiana 4 months before and I had fallen into a drab gym routine since I left all my gym buddies behind. I had about 20 pounds to lose from graduate school stress and I couldn’t seem to shed it with my prowler-strong-women-crossfit-new-tampafinalroutine.

What do you remember about your first Crossfit workout?

My first WOD, either my stubbornness kicked in or Coach Sarah took it easy on me. I am not sure which one, but I remember thinking, “well this isn’t that bad!” I went home contemplating if this is something I should continue doing… maybe I could just do this on my own. It wasn’t until the next day that I truly felt the intense workout that I had put my body through, then I knew I had to keep going! I have never given myself that kind of workout on my own! I now knew I NEEDED my new coach! Simply put, I am not the same woman I was when I walked into FitCity almost a year ago. I am now a much better version of that person. Obviously the physical changes have been amazing and something I was never able to accomplish on my own, but more importantly it is the mental changes that are the most dramatic. I now have an incredible confidence in my abilities that was not there before FitCity changed me and I am forever grateful for it! I am proud of so many things I have accomplished through Crossfit, but I think the thing I am most proud of is my pull-up!! It is such a great feeling to get that first one!

My favorite FitCity moment so far was Friday Night Lights for the Open. It was my first Crossfit Open (an international fun competition) and several of the workouts were a max weight for me. The atmosphere was incredibly electric and just made me want to keep going. I will never forget workout 15.5… rowing and thrusters for time. Ugh. I wanted to give up so many times. SO MANY TIMES. On the last set of 9 reps, everyone was circled around me, cheering me on and telling me they knew I could finish it. I tear up now thinking about that night and just how blessed I am to be a part of something so special.

What advice would you give someone who is considering joining FitCity?

I have 2 pieces of advice, but they tie together. The first one is you have to stop making excuses. There is always something else you could do, a couch you could sit on, an errand you can run, on and on. You just have to commit and bring yourself in, even when it may be the last thing you want to do that day. Which leads me to my second point, consistency is key. If you show up and trust in your Coach, you will go far beyond anything you would’ve dreamed when you started.

“When you want something you’ve never had, you have to do something you’ve never done.”
