Tell us something we don’t know about you Drew.
I “lettered” in Girls’ Golf in High School. Golf is my all‐time favorite sport and while in High School I volunteered as an manager/assistant coach of the Girls Golf team. I served in this position for two years and upon graduation they awarded me with a High School letter in golf!
What brought you to FitCity?
I have been doing Crossfit for a little more than a year now, ever since FitCity opened its door! I used to do a spin class 3‐4 times a week when I worked on MacDill AFB. After transferring jobs and now having to commute to Orlando, attending that class was no longer practical. I was desperately looking for something to fill my exercise void and when FitCity opened, I thought I would give it a try. It was close to home and provided me the opportunity to get a structured exercise program in before/after work. Having served in the military for over 18 years, I was very familiar with combination cardio/strength training.
Although I don’t remember exactly what my first WOD was, I felt comfortable with the format and enjoyed getting a full body workout in a relatively short period of
time. My main fitness goal when I joined FitCity was to lose weight. After making some wholesale changes in my diet and exercise regimen, I saw some quick gains, but still am not where I want to be. I continue to struggle with my physical appearance, but really appreciate the support of Javi and Sarah provide in keeping me on the track to a healthy way of life. Becoming a crossfitter and adopting the lifestyle has changed many things in my life. I have been applauded by my doctor for the phenomenal progress I have made in reducing my bad cholesterol. As a long‐time distance runner, I find that my endurance improved and recovery times are much shorter after long runs. I also learned that I have muscles in places where I never knew they existed. As someone who could never really get into weightlifting, I am most proud of my progress in that area. I still have a long way to go in that area, but I feel really good about the progress I have made in the last year.
We have had tons of good times during your first year. What is one of your favorite?
My favorite FitCity memories are of the Saturday Morning Partner WODs especially when I get to be paired with my wife. I also have been known to break out in song when the right jam comes on! However, the time we played Cards Against Humanity during the Halloween party was a close second…I have never laughed that much in my life!
My favorite quote is from a personal hero of mine, Pat Tillman. Pat was a fellow classmate at Arizona State who went on to play professional football before giving that up to join the Army after 9/11. Pat would later give the ultimate sacrifice in the service of this great country. Pat said, “Somewhere inside we hear a voice. It leads us in the direction of who we wish to become. But, it is up to us whether or not to follow.” This quote resonates with me as it is a testament to following your dreams but acknowledges that success cannot come without hard work! Even though it is extremely hard not to do, don’t compare yourself to others when it comes to Crossfit. We all are in different places in terms of fitness and comparing ourselves to each other is really an apples and oranges comparison. Fortunately, the overwhelming positive support provided by the other FitCity members makes it very easy to not fall in this trap.
