I was recently at a S.P.E.A.R.™/PDR/CrossFit Defense certification training in Las Vegas with Coach Tony Blauer. Coach Blauer has been teaching self-defense for more than 35 years. Needless to say, he knows his stuff and is incredibly passionate about bringing the message of personal safety to as many people as he can.

The training was an intense course of self-defense drills, learning the physiology and psychology behind self-defense and the startle-flinch response, and learning to convert the startle-flinch response (more on that in our upcoming course). Prior to this training, I attended a two-day trainer’s CrossFit Defense course last year. I left each of these trainings feeling empowered and with the skills I need to survive an ambush and to teach others to do the same. I’ve had a few people ask me why I went and how I could possibly learn to defend myself in a two-day or five-day training. The reason is simple: I want to teach my athletes how to survive an attack. I am passionate about keeping our members safe. As Coach Blauer put it at the CrossFit Defense course, “This is the most important skill I can teach you that I hope you never have to use.” As far as how I could possibly learn to defend myself in such a short time, read below–

The philosophy behind CrossFit Defense is simple (from crossfitdefense.com):

Coach Tony Blauer created a physiologic and instinct-based system that is the seamless interface between the high-intensity CrossFit protocol and the human in-grained self-defense system. Coach Blauer’s S.P.E.A.R. System™ is the only personal-defense system in the world based on the bodys physiological response to danger what the body wants to do prior to any training. This makes the S.P.E.A.R. System easy to learn.

The CrossFit Defense program combines the tenacity of the CrossFit athlete with the specific motor skills needed for personal defense. This results in a course designed to improve CrossFit performance, as well as teach participants the essential tools for surviving a violent ambush. Participants will leave with skills to put into practice immediately.

Simply put, CrossFit Defense is a system in which you, the CrossFit athlete, can use the skills and movements you’ve done hundreds or thousands of times in your CrossFit box, combined with your body’s natural response to danger, to defend yourself. Who wouldn’t want that?
