reach the goals. When starting something new, like a healthy lifestyle that includes CrossFit, it is best to focus on only one or two goals at a time.

Jack is about 20 pounds overweight and would like to get off his cholesterol medicine. He has young children and wishes he had the energy to run around and play with them. Thinking about all of these goals has been overwhelming for him, and he is paralyzed. They seem too big, so he has not been successful in changing his lifestyle.

Today was different. Today Jack met with a coach who shared the secrets for successfully reaching the above goals.

Here are some of those secrets:
1. Focus on only one or two goals at a time, especially when starting something new.
2. Write it down. If you don’t write it down, it’s floating around in our brains with lots of other stuff!
3. Define it. The goal should be a S.M.A.R.T. goal. (Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely)
4. Share your S.M.A.R.T. goal with someone who is committed to helping you achieve it.
5. Create a plan on how this goal will be implemented. Write that down too!

So here is what Jack decided would be his plan for success.

Of the three goals he mentioned, the most important one he decided was to lose weight. If he loses weight, he will likely reduce his cholesterol medicine and be more able to run around with his children. Then I shared another secret: the scale lies!! I asked him “would you rather see the number on the scale decrease OR lose several inches in your waistline? Jack realized he would rather lose inches off his body. We had a better defined goal.

Next we took measurements and Jack decided to lose 3 inches off his waist. Specific? Check! Measureable? Check! Attainable? Realistic? Check!

Finally, time frame: We agreed it is realistic to lose 3 inches off his waistline in 60 days if he is committed. HOW will it be achieved? He agreed to come to the gym a minimum of three times per week and set up a one on one nutrition session.

Now Jack is “dressed for success”! He has one specific, clearly defined goal that will help change his life and create a path to reaching many of his goals. He has the first person in his support crew who is committed to helping him achieve the goal: his coach!
