Fitness goals – Be honest with yourself

Health. Wellness. Strength. Stamina. Lean. Power. There is no magic pill. If there was, I would gladly pass it out to my athletes. Instead, the above fitness goals require perseverance, hard work, and focus. They are available to anyone who is willing to put in the time. You must be honest with yourself and ask:

Am I willing to put in the work to get better in this area?

Take this question very seriously. For example, you want a pull up, right? Are you willing to stay daily and work on the progressions? Maybe the idea of doing pull ups sounds cool, but are you willing to put in the extra work. Want to improve definition in your arms or build your six pack abs? Are you asking your coach for ways to focus on these areas and then taking action on Friday, make up day?

How far am I willing to go to improve?

Often times mobility, flexibility, or stability are the limiting factors for improving strength or progressing in a skill. Have you met one on one with your coach to focus on these specific goals? Are you doing the homework your coach has recommended for you, even though it may be unenjoyable. “If you really want to do something, you’ll find a way. If you don’t, you’ll find an excuse.” Be honest with yourself. If you are finding an excuse, acknowledge it and take action.  

When I ask my coach for advice, do I want to know the answer or am I looking for a quick fix?

Let’s say you want to lose weight. You are working out three times per week and haven’t seen as much change as you’d like. You talk to your coach. The next step your coach recommends requires changing your eating/drinking habits. Are you ready to take a serious look at your nutritional habits? Maybe you want to get stronger? You are putting in the time in the gym but not allowing your body to recover with proper recovery days or adequate calorie consumption. Did you want your coach tell you to lift heavier or more often? Perhaps that is not the solution.

After answering these questions, you can determine if you are committed to your current goals or if you need a new plan. For many, accountability from either a coach or a friend can make all the difference. If you would like more guidance to stay on track with your goals, your coaches happy to help.
